“T” For Texas started life in 1927 when Jimmie Rodgers recorded it as Blue Yodel #1. When it was released the next year it became a phenomenal seller, reaching half a million in sales. It was covered extensively over the decades, by country artists like Merle Travis. blues artists Memphis Slim & Willie Dixon, and pop artists The Everly Brothers. In 1976 it was included on the Wanted! The Outlaws album, which was the first million-selling country album, and Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s live album, One More For The Road. Cash himself even recorded it in 1969 in a session with Bob Dylan.
For some reason, this version of the song (released posthumously on the Unearthed box set) has T in quotes (the only version to do so), which lets me include the song here, as well as other versions under Blue Yodel #1 and T For Texas.
