Cab Calloway recorded this track with his orchestra in 1939. It became the 2nd biggest his of his career, behind only “Minnie The Moocher“. In 1943 he performed it in this amazing clip from the musical Stormy Weather.
It went on to be covered quickly by The Andrews Sisters and Glenn Miller, later covered by Joe Jackson on his Jump Blues tribute album “Jumpin’ Jive”, as well as third wave swing revivalists Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. It was even covered with a solo acoustic guitar in a lo-fi fashion by Beck on an early demo tape he recorded.
